Meeting Notes

On April 14, 2009 the Literacy Support Network met in the Board Auditorium of the Hattie Mae White ESC (morning session 8:30-11:30 and afternoon session 12:30-3:30). This was a mandatory meeting for all members. The next meeting will be a mandatory meeting for all members on May 5.

Attendance: 86%
NORTH: Rosa Smith-Williams (Washington), Saundra Miles (Prep Academy), Tammie Ridges (Fonville)
SOUTH Angela Jackson (Dowline), Mary Batiste (Woodson)
EAST: Denise Wischmeyer (Edison), Patricia Shepherd (Chavez FP), Lynda Cobb (Stevenson), Patty Estrada (Furr FP)
WEST: 100% attendance
CENTRAL: Alicia McAfee (Reagan), Sofia D’Arcy (Clifton), Mary Ridley (Ryan)
ALTERNATIVE: 100% attendance

The meeting was focused on reviewing the coaching work done during the year.

Coaches began by using the Text Rendering Protocol to read and discuss sections of the book Taking Action on Adolescent Literacy (by Irvin, Meltzer and Dukes) that describe vignettes of what a “literacy school” looks like.

Coaches were then randomly grouped and paired in order to interview each other about their effective coaching experiences using the Appreciative Inquiry Protocol (see attached). Interview partners then shared with their tablemates the highlights of the interview. Table facilitators scribed common themes that were found in the effective coaching experiences.
